John Grandine

John M. Grandine, of Hartford, passed away Monday, January 13, 2014 at the age of 75 years. He was born August 1, 1938 in Crandon, Wisconsin, the son of Lester and Amy {nee Smith} Grandine. The youngest of seven children, John was born and raised on the family’s 80-acre farm in Crandon. After graduating from Crandon High School in 1956, he earned a degree in Botany at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1960. Degree in hand, he joined his father-in-law Robert Klockow, Sr. on the faculty of Hartford Union High School that Fall. This was his true calling, as he spent the next forty years there inspiring students by teaching mathematics, coaching cross-country and wrestling, and serving as athletic director and co-curricular coordinator. John was a devout Christian and member of the First United Methodist Church. He loved fishing, card games, high school sports, Badger athletics and cooking breakfasts for his guests at “Grand Inn.” He and his wife Dorothy founded and ran the Hartford Duplicate Bridge Club. John achieved the rank of Gold Life Master with the American Contract Bridge League. John is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Joseph Grandine, and his sisters Lois Wright and Rosemary Thompson. He is survived by his loving wife Dorothy (nee Klockow) Grandine, his sons Thomas (Patricia) Grandine and David (Julie) Grandin, his granddaughters Hayley and Hannah Grandine and Gabrielle and Madeline Grandin, his brother Lester Grandine, his sisters Faith Bentley and Alice Stapel and his brothers-in-law Robert (Barbara) Klockow and E. Dale Thompson. In celebration of John’s life, family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, January 17 from 1-4 PM at the First United Methodist Church, 738 West Monroe Avenue, Hartford. A memorial celebration will follow at 4 PM at the Church. Rev. Paul Johnsen will officiate.
