Edna Ida Henkel

Edna Ida Henkel, of Hustisford, passed away Sunday, March 21, 2010 at St. Mary’s Ozaukee Hospital at the age of 91 years. She was born June 20, 1928, in the town of Ashippun, the daughter of Erich and Alvina (nee Ottow) Groehler. She led an active life, working at a sewing shop in Watertown, working at Square D in Milwaukee, and dancing at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio. In the late 1950’s, Edna moved to California, where she met and married Mark Henkel. While there, she worked at a wall-to-wall carpeting shop until she retired. Edna moved back to Hustisford after her husband died in 1997, to live with and care for her twin sister Adeline. She was never blessed with children of her own, but she adored her nieces and nephews, and always enjoyed spending time with them. Edna enjoyed sewing and spent a lot of time reupholstering furniture for friends and relatives. She could be seen mending and altering clothes for many people, including her nieces and nephews. In later years, Edna sewed quilt tops for the quilting group at Faith Lutheran Church in Cedarburg, where her sister LaVerne attends services. Edna took pleasure in decorating her home for various holidays. When Adeline entered the nursing home, Edna decorated her room there as well. She looked forward to Wednesdays when she and her dear friend Gladys would have their weekly outing, and Sunday evenings when they played cards. Edna is survived by her sister LaVerne (Jim) Gresch, her sister-in-law Adeline Abuya, several nieces, nephews, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mark, her brothers Hilbert and Elmer Groehler, sisters-in-law Dolores “Lovie” Groehler and Esther Will, two brothers-in-law Stanley and Phil Henkel, and her twin sister Adeline Groehler just five weeks earlier. Visitation will be held Monday, March 29, 2010 from 9 – 11 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, N572 County Road R, Lebanon. Funeral Service will follow at 11 AM at the Church. Rev. Reinhold Markwart will officiate. Interment Hustisford Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Mary’s Ozaukee Hospital Emergency Center and the ICU there for their wonderful care and compassion during Edna’s short stay there. Memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lebanon or Faith Lutheran Church of Cedarburg would be appreciated.
