LaVerne G Zietlow

LaVerne G. Zietlow of Hustisford passed away Monday October 6, 2014 in her home at the age of 95 years. She was born May 9, 1919, the daughter of Willie and Clara (nee Dahms) Kaul. She was a member of Hustisford’s First United Presbyterian Church for 87 years and maintained her membership until the church closed. She graduated from Dodge County Normal School (Teacher’s College) Mayville in 1938 and began teaching Kindergarten through 8th grade that fall. During the summer and evenings of 1942 through 1947 she worked at the local canning factory after teaching school. In 1951 she married Otto Zietlow at Hustisford’s First United Presbyterian Church. During that same year she began teaching in the Hustisford Consolidated Schools. Her career and education spanned a period of 35 years. Much of that time was spent teaching Kindergarten through 8th grade in a one-room school house throughout the Hustisford School District. In a one-room school house a teacher not only taught, a teacher had to cook, administer first-aid, take care of janitorial duties, shovel snow, and stoke the stove to keep the students from freezing. Not only did she teach academic classes but she was also a Sunday School Teacher for many years. She retired from education in 1963. LaVerne was very active in her community. She was a charter member of the Hustisford American Legion Auxiliary #420. Her involvement spanned 60 years, where she served as secretary when the organization was formed, vice president and historian. Her community involvement also included the American Red Cross for 45 years and chairwoman of the bicentennial from 1975-1976. LaVerne is survived by her niece Judith A. (nee Kaul) (Dennis) Brendemuehl and her family, Chad (Monica) and Mathew Brendemuehl; Darla (Sarah Tracy) Brendemuehl; Noah and Lamar Brendemuehl; Kyle (Josie) and Will Brendemuehl; Shea Brendemuehl; and her nephews Kenneth L. (Elaine) Kaul and his family, Corey (Kelly) Lear-Kaul and Paige Lear-Kaul, Owen “Kirk” (Mari) Kaul and his family; Carissa (Joe) Pahlow, Will, Blake & Stella Pahlow; and Jamison (fiancé Christa Schultz) Kaul; niece Joyce Boden; nephew Wayne Wetzel (Michele Anderson); nephews David (Susan) Radtke; Roger (Joan) Radtke, and cousin Wesley Altwies. LaVerne is also survived by many other relatives and friends. Visitation is Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Horicon First United Presbyterian Church South Cedar and Mill Streets from 2-3:45 PM. Funeral service will follow at church at 4 PM Rev. Paul Hudson will officiate. The family invites you to continue sharing your fellowship and support during a meal following the service. Interment Sunday, October 12 at 11:30 AM at Hustisford Cemetery.
